Break-even ROAS
At a 40% gross margin, ads must return at least this per $1 to cover their cost
2.50×
Gross profit after ad spend
Revenue × margin, minus the ad spend
$560
Revenue a 4× ROAS needs
At your current ad spend
$8,000
Most you can spend at this revenue
Spend past this and the ads lose money at your margin

Break-even ROAS covers ad spend and the cost of the work or goods only — not overhead, shipping, or fees. If your margin already nets those out, it is your true floor.

The math
A 3× ROAS sounds healthy until your margin says otherwise. At a 25% gross margin you keep $0.25 of every revenue dollar, so your ads must return $4 per $1 spent before they make anything at all. The break-even line is the floor every target has to clear.
Most ad platforms report ROAS without asking about your margin, so accounts get optimized toward a number that can still lose money. Work out the floor first; anything above it is a target worth chasing, and anything below it is spend to fix or cut.
It is the same math the AnvilAds agent works from: server-side tracking ties revenue back to the exact campaign, so optimization chases real jobs and sales — not clicks.
